Challenging Physical training before the tour should begin no later than 2 months before, as you will have a height of 3,000 meters above sea level and more. Hiking is from 6 km daily with an average pace that can be maintained for hours. It is important to have physical fitness & endurance. You will also need the right gear and clothes according to the weather.
Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Scenic Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760m), then on to Dharapani (1,860m) - 8/9 hour drive
Today marks the beginning of your journey on the famous Annapurna Circuit trek route! The day starts with a scenic drive from bustling Kathmandu to the serene town of Besisahar, taking approximately 6 to 7 hours. As we leave the city, the road winds through picturesque hills, terraced farms, and quaint villages. Besisahar, often seen as the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, offers a beautiful resting point before we continue.
From here, we hop into a local jeep for a bumpy yet thrilling ride along the Marsyangdi River to Dharapani. This 3 to 4-hour drive introduces you to the changing landscapes and the rugged charm of Annapurna trekking.
Day 2: Trek from Dharapani (1860m) to Chame (2,740m) - 5/6 hour hike
The trek from Dharapani to Chame takes you through a beautiful and scenic part of the Annapurna region. Starting from Dharapani, you’ll walk along trails surrounded by dense forests of pine and oak, with occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks like Lamjung Himal. The peaceful environment, with the sound of the Marsyangdi River flowing below, makes for a relaxing yet exciting trek.
As you approach Chame, the landscape starts to open up, offering stunning views of Annapurna II and Manaslu. Chame is the district headquarters of the Manang district and has a few teahouses where you can rest and enjoy the surrounding mountain views, marking a perfect end to the day's trek.
Day 3: Trek from Chame (2,740m) to Pisang (3,250m) – 5/6 hour hike
Leaving Chame, we follow the scenic Marshyangdi River along winding trails that reveal awe-inspiring views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. This stretch of the Annapurna trail takes us through beautiful forests with the sound of the river providing a calming backdrop.
As we near Pisang, the landscape changes dramatically, opening up to vast mountain views and showcasing the majestic terrain of the Annapurna Circuit Nepal is known for. Pisang itself is a picturesque village with ancient monasteries and traditional stone houses, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage that makes it a memorable stop.
Day 4: Trek from Pisang (3,250m) to Nawal (3,650m) - 5/6 hour hike
Today, the trail gives you two choices: a lower and a higher route. Many trekkers opt for the higher route, known for its panoramic views of the Annapurna range, including Annapurna II and Gangapurna. The extra effort pays off with stunning views and the sense of truly being immersed in the Himalayas.
The village of Nawal is a peaceful place where you can unwind after a rewarding day on the Annapurna hike. This quiet village, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, is a beautiful blend of challenging climbs and moments of tranquility.
Day 5: Trek from Nawal (3,650m) to Manang (3,519m) - 4/5 hour hike
The trail from Nawal to Manang offers breathtaking views of Annapurna, Gangapurna, and other towering peaks. As we descend slightly, you’ll pass through forests, fields, and charming villages, experiencing the diversity that makes trekking the Annapurna circuit unique.
Arriving in Manang feels like stepping into a traditional Himalayan town. This bustling village is a popular stop on the Annapurna trail, with plenty of cozy teahouses and stunning mountain views, making it an ideal spot to relax and acclimate.
Day 6: Rest and Acclimatization in Manang
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, crucial for adjusting to the higher altitudes of the Annapurna circuit. Manang offers stunning views of surrounding peaks and plenty to explore. You can visit local monasteries, stroll through the village, or enjoy the panoramic scenery.
For those wanting a bit more activity, a short hike to Gangapurna Lake provides stunning views of the Annapurna range and helps with acclimatization. This day helps prepare you for the challenging high passes ahead.
Day 7: Trek from Manang (3,519m) to Yak Kharka (4,020m) - 4/5 hour hike
Leaving Manang, the trail gradually ascends through sparse vegetation and rocky terrain, immersing you in the alpine landscape of the Annapurna hike. As you gain altitude, enjoy sweeping views of Annapurna III and Gangapurna, surrounded by small meadows where yak herders tend their flocks.
Reaching Yak Kharka offers a peaceful respite, surrounded by panoramic mountain views and a sense of solitude that’s refreshing after the bustling villages of lower altitudes.
Day 8: Trek from Yak Kharka (4,020m) to Thorong Phedi (4,450m) - 5/6 hour hike
Today’s trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi marks the final approach to Thorong La Pass. The trail climbs gradually through a rugged landscape, surrounded by towering peaks, including Thorong Peak, setting a dramatic scene for the day.
Thorong Phedi serves as a final resting point before the pass, with ample time to relax, prepare, and take in the awe-inspiring views before tomorrow’s big climb.
Day 9: Cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and Descend to Muktinath (3,800m) - 7/8 hour hike
An early morning start sees you climbing to the highest point on the Annapurna Circuit trek, the famed Thorong La Pass. The challenging ascent rewards you with incredible views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, an unforgettable highlight of your journey.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends to the sacred town of Muktinath, a spiritual haven for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath’s temples and 108 water spouts offer a serene environment to reflect on the day’s accomplishments.
Day 10: Trek from Muktinath (3,800m) to Jomsom (2,743m) - 5/6 hour hike
Today’s trek from Muktinath to Jomsom takes you through the Mustang region’s arid, otherworldly landscape, offering a stark contrast to the lush valleys of earlier days on the Annapurna circuit hike.
Jomsom, known for its strong winds and as a trade hub, offers a lively atmosphere to relax after days in the high mountains. With its blend of culture and scenery, Jomsom is a memorable stop on the Annapurna route.
Day 11: Drive from Jomsom (2,743m) to Pokhara (822m) - 5/6 hour drive
Leaving the rugged mountains behind, the drive from Jomsom to Pokhara is a scenic descent into lush, green hills, passing through terraced fields and riverside villages. Pokhara’s tranquil lakeside is a perfect spot to unwind after your trek, with views of the Annapurna range reflecting off Fewa Lake.
Day 12: Return Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu - 7/8 hour drive
The drive back to Kathmandu offers a final chance to soak in Nepal’s scenic countryside. Winding along rivers and through forested hills, this drive brings you full circle, back to Kathmandu’s vibrant city life after an epic journey on the Annapurna Circuit.

In November 2024, I had the opportunity to make use of Contour Expeditions to plan a trek to Everest Base Camp. Communication was great with the planning, accommodation, itinerary and trek information before I left. When I arrived I was met by the team in Kathmandu and they really did a great job in looking after me, including a welcome dinner and briefing session. They had everything arranged, including the flights to Lukla and back, as well as a really experienced, English speaking guide and a friendly capable porter. The trek went without a hitch, teahouse accommodation and 3 meals a day were provided. There seem to be hundreds of trekking and expedition companies in Nepal, however, I would be careful to do your research and make sure you choose a experienced company like Contour Expeditions. I will definitely be back to do another trek soon and would have no hesitation to make use of them again. Thank you Contour Expeditions for the fun, memorable experience.
